Best NU team in 7 decades and you all want Carmody fired. Please name someone we could actually get in here as a coach that could recruit an even higher level of talent than Carmody. That is what it is going to take to finish above .500 in the B1G. And before you name someone, think to yourself, “Will any other major conference teams be interested in this coach?” If the answer is yes, we don’t have a shot at him.

As far as Drew Crawford, per Teddy G, he tweeted:

“Worst Charlie horse ever. Feel like Thor took his hammer to my quad.”

Greenstein tweeted for more info, and Crawford says: “yep, feeling great! Day of rest will help.”

So at least as far as that goes, it sounds like (barring some injury at practice) they’ll be at least as healthy on Saturday as they were yesterday.

HOLY SHIT ENOUGH OF THE REPLACE CARMODY CRAP ALREADY. This team is still alive for a chance at the NCAA’s this late in the season. Talk about that after the season is over…….blah blah blah replace Carmody……Talk about winning at Penn St and hoping that Crawford is healthy

There is a lot of talk about how they now have the blueprint to guarding Shurna and the Cats. Bang him around and switch all the screens. Then where is the adjustment? That is what competing is about from the sidelines. There were times when Shurna had a guy 5 – 6 inches shorter than him guarding him b/c he switched. Yet b/c we are too stubborn to get out of the Princeton offense, Mr. Shurna is still running around the perimeter. How about telling Shurna that as soon as you recognize this advantage, promptly run to the post and we will get a shooter to lob the ball into you and you go to work. Or how about a pick and roll, pick and pop play? Clear out a side and let 2 guys go to work. This is what other team do…often. When you have a skilled guy who is 6’9″, a team constantly switching is exactly what we want. But only if the coach is willing to adjust from his genius offense. Sorry for being so negative, but I am tired of giving the other team credit for being better than us, that only leads to the NIT

Fair enough. But can we at least agree to hope that Dr. Philips has a list of potential candidates in his desk in case we come up short? Go Cats and once again, I agree that these kids have given their very best to bring us a bid.

“Calmer” has the best comment so far, in my opinion. This team has a remarkable inability to function at the end of close games (and this has been a pattern in recent years). Coaching? Fatigue? Jitters? Don’t really know, but I fear Northwestern will unfortunately miss the tournament (sub-500 teams are few and far between historically). And when all the RPI, SOS, and other stats are crunched, here’s the only statistic I think you’ll need to dissect NU’s season: Last minute B10 games this season: 4 (Illinois, Michigan, Purdue, Michigan). Last minutes victories: zero.

We’ve got three teams left on the schedule– Penn State, who we beat decisively at home this year; Iowa, who we beat decisively at home this year; and Ohio State, who we played to 1 point at home and OT on a neutral court last year. That all happened with the same coach who makes you cringe, and with almost all of the same players.

Win the next three games and they’re in the tournament. Win two of three and there’s a solid chance.

Your original comment said there was “no chance” they could do that. No chance. “It is over.”

Carmody may not be the best coach in basketball. Maybe he should have been fired long ago. Maybe last night’s loss will kill the team’s spirits and it’ll play out the way you said.

BUT, Carmody and the team have shown enough to make me believe it’s at the very least possible for it to happen. I think we owe it to them to give them a chance.

So I don’t see how you can speak in absolutes about what this team will do. I don’t see how it’s fair to write them off now.

I’m not quitting on them, not when they’re still the closest any team from this school has ever gotten. We can talk about Carmody all you want in two weeks.

We lost because (1) Michigan is a little quicker and a lot deeper and (2) Crawford got hurt and was ineffective. We still took them to overtime.

The Michiganders’ quickness let them overplay Shurna and harass Sobo all game long, and Crawford’s ineffectiveness let them do that with impunity. Without another scoring threat, they could take risks against Shurna, and it worked out. Let’s just hope that whatever happened when Crawford banged his knee isn’t too bad.

It didn’t help that the zeebs called a finicky game in the first half, then seemed to run out of whistle air in the second. If #24′s jersey said “Sullinger” instead of “Shurna,” the whole Michigan team would have fouled out. Twice. As it was, he shot 0 that’s ZERO as in NO FTs. In a home game.

And we still took them to overtime. Proud of you, I am.
