The Gator Bowl rings are in!

Oh what an exciting day it is for Northwestern football today.

The Wildcats’ first Bowl Championship rings since 1948 arrived in the mail and were distributed to players and coaches Wednesday. Kain Colter posted a photo of his stylish ring on InstagramLike Northwestern’s Big Ten championship rings of recent years, the front is pretty simply the Northwestern “N” logo on a purple background. On one side, as Colter shows, is the player’s name, the year and the Gator Bowl trophy. On the other side it says “10 wins” and has the player’s number and position. Or at least Colter’s does.

If there is any way to put finality on the amazing 2012 season — with its 10 wins and bowl victory — it is with these rings. Congratulations to the entire Northwestern football team on this accomplishment. On to the next!

Shurna vs. Juice Part Deux

Earlier this season, Michael Thompson and Villeurbanne upset Strasbourg SIG to clinch a playoff spot with a 84-81 win on National Championship Monday back in April. Of course, their paths would cross again.

Shurna’s Strasbourg SIG and Thompson’s Asvel Villeurbanne met in the semifinals of the French A League on Tuesday. Strasbourg won the first leg against Asvel behind a team-best 16 points from John Shurna. We always knew he would step up once he tasted the postseason and the chance to win a championship. Shurna scored 16 points in 22 minutes off the bench, making five of eight shots. He did most of his damage in the first half as Strasbourg built a 30-16 lead in the second quarter.

Asvel did come back and take the lead in the third quarter, but a 26-13 fourth quarter gave Strasbourg the key victory.

Michael Thompson had nine points on 4-for-8 shooting in 33 minutes and added three assists to his total. Asvel will play Strasbourg in the second leg of the semifinal on Thursday in Villeurbanne. It is a best of three series so Thompson will have to be on his game to force a decisive third leg on Saturday and get season bragging rights over his college teammate.

Rodger Sherman of Sippin’ On Purple compiled a Storify of all the tweets coming from the first leg of the series.

The game tips off at 1:30 p.m. Central Time, if you want to follow along on the LNB Web site.

  • Chasmo

The ring is so big (and so busy in its design) — would anyone really want to wear it around for more than a day or two? Do players really wear those big monstrosities or are they really more like mini-trophies that one puts on display in one’s home rather than on one’s finger?

  • Update to the post: Strasbourg is on its way to the French League Finals. Shurna scored 6 points in 20 minutes on 2/2 3FGs in a 73-52 win to sweep the series. Juice had a team-high 14 points for Asvel.
