Husker Do – ‘Cats Look To Get To Magic .500 Mark In Lincoln

Wildcat fans are sitting up in their chairs.  Northwestern (12-8,3-4) is looking to do something very rare in the Bill Carmody era, or any era for that matter. A win today over Nebraska (10-10, 1-6)  at 2pm ct on ESPNU, and the ‘Cats would move to 4-4 in B1G play, and obviously move to .500.  Sure, it is the mendoza line of mediocrity, but for Wildcat Nation, a .500 mark is the unofficial symbol of breaking through.  With a completely loaded B1G conference, the nation’s top-ranked basketball league, a .500 mark in conference play (9-9) is pretty much a surefire ticket to get to the Big Dance.  But, we’re getting way ahead of ourselves. I think I speak for many of you when I say that the ‘Cats being 4-4, with this team, after 8 games wasn’t even on the dream radar.

The ‘Cats are 5-1 on the road this year and have played much better away from Welsh-Ryan Arena.  They can’t explain it, we can’t explain it, but we only hope it continues. Don’t kid yourself, though. Nebraska and their fans are eyeing this one as one of those few “gotta win” games and are likely confident that they can take us down. The Huskers have had a rough go of it only beating Penn State, the conference’s punching bag this season, while getting their doors blown out regularly.  The Illini blasted them by 20, Ohio State crushed them by 26, but they did give Sparty and Wisconsin all they could handle in close losses.

We’ll keep this post up during the game for your comments and hopefully will have a lot to be happy about heading in to the middle third of our schedule. And, should NU win, they move the all-time series with Nebraska to .500 as well (would be 3-3), a rare feat for our program.

I’ll Grant you that. We’ll see if Coach Bill can Mould this squad into a .500 team

      • Man, you guys are on it with the play on words. Love it.

Do you really think that 18-13 overall (9-9 in B1G) would get us to the tourney? I love your optimism, but I just don’t see how < 20 wins gets us in. Care to elaborate, LTP?

    • Absolutely. I should have added a first round BTT win would need to be added to that, but 20 wins really isn’t relevant. it’s all about the RPI and strength of schedule and eliminating bad losses. For us to win six more games in conference would likely mean no bad losses (Nebraska or Penn State) and likely beating two more ranked teams. Our RPI would skyrocket to likely Top 45 if we were to do that. Considering the committee looks at every game, Reggie Hearn being hurt in a 2-point home loss to Stanford, winning at Baylor and playing Butler all get in to that equation. The strength of the B1G is so clearly head and shoulders above other leagues this year, that a .500 mark in this conference, I’m willing to say, would be a lock. And, if there is even a close call with us and other bubble teams, I still believe the committee is human and the NU story, with all of the media hype that surround us would give us yet another edge.

NU fans know that Bill Carmody is a great coach in terms of X’s & O’s but often comes up short in other aspects of the job, such as the motivation and inspiration of his troops.
Today NU will be in the rare position of being favored to win. Will Carmody’s team come out fired up to take control of the game from the opening tip or will it come out flat and let Nebraska hang around all game long?
This game will be interesting to watch.
    Let’s hope for the best.
