‘Cats Hoops Slam Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Move to 3-0

Northwestern University against Chicago State

Northwestern’s home opener was played under a lot of drama. The breaking news of Kevin Coble’s side of the quitting the team story in Sports Illustrated today hovered over the ‘Cats game at Welsh-Ryan earlier tonight. The circus show around tomorrow’s Wrigley game and the craziness surrounding the teams playing one direction was even more of a buzz. Neither of it distracted the men’s team as they throttled Arkansas Pine-Bluff (0-3) 71-45 in a game that wasn’t even that close.

John Shurna and Drew Crawford each led the way with 17 points as NU blitzed out to a 44-25 halftime lead. JerShon Cobb nabbed eight boards and is starting to work his way in to shape. The ‘Cats have a week off before cranking up the competition level with a home tilt vs Creighton next Sunday night and then Georgia Tech following that. Click here for the NU recap.

How about the Big Ten? Illinois downs Maryland and Minnesota upsets #8 North Carolina. It’s going to be a heckuva tough year in the conference. Wow.

It’s really hard to say whether Minnesota’s win is good or bad for us. If North Carolina doesn’t tank, Minnesota just gained a big edge over us come selection time. However, it also puts our destiny in our own hands. Beating Minnesota and potentially finishing ahead of them in the Big Ten would help our reputation following this win.

Now time to get some sleep. My alarm is set for just over 5 hours from now…

    @ NorthwesternHighlights:

The human polls were dumb, as they always are with traditional powerhouses. There was no way that UNC should have been in the Top 15, let alone #8. It’s the same argument we’ve had for the past three years about how Notre Dame keeps getting overstated in football. (On a personal note, I would not have had UNC ranked at all, because they didn’t make the NCAAs last year

Face it — if you lose your ranking, you should have to earn it back.
