Land of Lincoln Links

The Chicago Tribune offered the first photo I've seen of the Land of Lincoln Trophy

Kafka/Persa Update
NUSports.com's Skip Myslenski offers some insights in to the health of Mike Kafka (very good) and Dan Persa (we'll see) as Mick McCall preps multiple gameplans for Saturday. Click here to see what Fitz and Mick have to say about planning for the Illini.

Loosening Up
The Trib's Shannon Ryan offers this article seeking to find the secret sauce to not only Illini's success, but specifically what they've done to start putting points on the board. The answer? Zook's convinced them to loosen up. See here.

Same Old Story
Rodney Dangerfield's estate may want royalties from Northwestern. The line on the 'Cats game continues to move in favor of the 3-6 team. Ron Zook doesn't quite get it either - see here.

Taking Down The Nurse
The ST offers up this feature article on DL, Kevin Nurse who blew up Adam Weber last week sacking him four times, the most sacks for an Illini in a game since Simeon Rice in 1994. Click here to learn why Mike Hankwitz is paying extra special attention to stopping Nurse.

Irish Eyes Are Frowning
This Neil Hayes column in the Sun-Times caught my eye. It wasn't your typical "Weis sucks, fire him now!" piece, but rather a legitimate, calculated critisicism of the ND coach insisting an apology for calling out one of his own players in the wake of some honest postgame comments. Essentially a player on ND claimed the Irish were outschemed and didn't execute on D. Weis promptly threw said player under the bus by claiming there is a reason he isn't a team captain. Nice. Why would I sign up to play for this guy? Click here.
Opening Tip
Several of you are doing the NU Land of Lincoln "double-dip" attending both the 'Cats hoops opener against NIU on Friday night then heading to Champaign for the football game against the Illini. Here is some motivation from NU alum/Sporting News writer, Dan Shanoff on yet another story of the potential THIS IS THE YEAR. Click here.

@LTP, I assume you mean OC McCall will try to stop/neutralize Nurse, and not DC Hankwitz?

I was trying to figure out what the trophy reminded me of. Then it hit me. It looks just like a rigged carny ringtoss game.

Interesting no mention of Joe Mauro in the QB contingency plan dialogue - I assume he is fourth on the depth chart or hurt? Would be nice if he were available should Kafka & Persa go down instead of burning Watkins red shirt. Anybody know more re Joe?

Mauro is still hurt, yeah. He's been on the sidelines in sweats.

Thanks for the info...and great call on the LoL "rigged ring toss" trophy. Let's hope that Illinois continues to feel this game is rigged against them every year, and not NU!

I know we're supposed to have moved on, but that bit of the S-T article about questionnable calls brings it up again. How can anyone think there should have been a facemask penalty on that end zone play? Last night, BTN played it about five times, including once where they had Corey walk through it, and he clearly grabs Ricky around the waist and brings him down pushing the ball out.

The LOL trophy has absolutely zero significance for either school. Bring back the bell, introduce an ax or cut off Furpaw's paw, anything but the electric toilet seat...

that trophy looks like a glorified monopoly playing piece

@ElSupaKat - I agree, definitely from Monopoly.

Aleks, I think the faux face mask debate springs from a picture that BHGP included on Monday that shows a Wildcat player's hand (Jack DiNardo?) in front of Stanzi's helmet as Wootton takes him down. At first glance, it looks like it might have been a face mask. However, the replay clearly shows DiNardo's hand go up and around Stanzi's helmet and never grab it.

Monopoly indeed.
I'm still hoping for a giant lincoln log.

Does that trophy come with a bowl of cereal? Because it looks like the hat the Lucky Charms elf wears.

Scott said...

Looks like the hat they wear in Punxsutawney, PA on Ground Hog Day. Perhaps it should be the NU vs. Penn State game trophy?

Maybe that's how Coble hurt his ankle.

Go win it, then misplace it.
