The Trophy Formerly Known As Sweet Sioux Tomahawk
Far from offering much coverage on, say, the x's and o's of tomorrow's football game (hey, thank goodness for LTP!), the Trib briefly offers up the skinny behind the official retirement of the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk after tomorrow's game in this article. As Illinois' Athletic Department spokesman noted, "[w]e're going to be working with Northwestern over the coming months to establish a new series trophy." Ahh, smells like a poll question in the near future. But why wait -- let's put it to our loyal readers, as some sort of new prize needs to be created before next season. Perhaps our athletic department would be fired up to hear from the purple faithful in suggesting the new reward for the victors. Thoughts?

A gigantic Lincoln Log.
a good education...
Too much?
A gigantic Lincoln Log is a FANTASTIC idea.
How about a 20-foot long piece of cheap wood with a crappy cherry stain and two indentations on each end? And the first team to 50 wins gets a roof to put on top of it.
Ah hi, don't change a thing???? maybe???
So if they retire the politically incorrect trophy at this final contest, what do you think the chances of them playing Mike and the Mechanics "In the Living Years" as a farewell song are?? Any takers?
I would also like to throw my support behind the Lincoln Log idea. Well done, Avery.
Al Capone's tommy gun?
A champaign glass full of lake Michigan water?
A box full of onions?
An old route 66 sign
Besides my earlier suggestion of Erin Andrews as the travelling trophy?
Well, in honor of this namesakes' blog....how about a set of goal posts? The winner paints them their school's colors each year....if the other team wins and "takes" them, they get to lake them and re-paint them?
Seriously, it would fit the tradition, and be fun.....get the students into it, etc....
What about the Sweet Sue Tommyhawk
Or, just go back to the Wooden Cigar Store Indian
+1 for the giant Lincoln Log, but only if it's painted purple.
@lord Willie - that was funny. Very funny. That's the same semantic game Zook must use to get some of the players past admissions at Illinois...
There will be a post on this exact topic on Monday, complete with a poll. Keep the names coming!!!
Go Cats!!!!
I think a piece of Lincolniana is a great idea, especially since 2009 is the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth. Maybe an axe or a giant maul. Lincoln was known as "The Rail splitter". I think The Railsplitter Axe or The Railsplitter Maul sound really cool, and would be lots of fun.
Alternatively, a giant ear of corn.
