(courtesy Chicago Tribune)This week you will read a zillion times about how the Cats are seeking their first 4-0 start since 1962, which is also the last time they swept at least 3 non-conference opponents (they went 2-0 in OOC in 1963). Here is my weekly attempt to make you the envy of the water cooler - Northwestern style - here are some Wildcataganda! tidbits.
Getting Defensive
Most of this decade has been downright offensive when it comes to defense. However, after the most inspired defensive play in the Pat Fitzgerald era, Mike Hankwitz' unit is putting up some impressive numbers. Consider:
- The Cats are averaging 12. 3 ppg, which is 19h in the nation and 3rd in the Big Ten
- The Cats have not posted such a low scoring average after 3 games since 1986
- NU is 3rd in the nation and 1st in the Big Ten in sacks with 3.67 per game
- Corey Wooton is leading the Big Ten in sacks and is tied for 5th nationally with 1.33 per gm
O-Line Questions Answered
- Yes, the Cats offense has yet to hit 5th gear, but the "big" question in the off-season was our o-line. The Cats currently rank 9th in the nation having only given up 1 sack on the season. Only Wisconsin has done better in the Big Ten.
Tyrell Sutton Record Book Watch
- #19 needs 9 rushing TDs to set the NU record currently held by Damien Anderson (38)
- Sutton has 35 total TDs (rushing and receiving) and needs 4 to surpass Damien Anderson's record (38)
- He is currently 4th in rushing TDs and needs 3 to best Jason Wright's mark of 32
- Tyrell needs 4 rec yards to become the 2nd player in NU history to eclipse 1000 yards rushing and 1000 yards receiving (Ricky Edwards)
- TS has 4,311 career all-purpose yards and needs 299 yards to pass Darnell Autry and become #2 alltime
- TS has 3,307 career rushing yards which is the best (barely) in the Big Ten among active RBs and is good for 3rd place on the NU alltime list. He needs 487 yards to eclipse Darnell Autry and move into 2nd place.
