Once a year I get a ridiculously late Monday night phone call from my mom. She calls to breakdown her thoughts of the cult-like addiction we hoop heads have to CBS' signature One Shining Moment. This year, the debate raged about Mario Chalmers' place in signature shot lure (behind Jordan, Smart and Charles, but in the team photo). Overall, I thought this year's edition of OSM was well done - perhaps in large part because I was still intoxicated from possibly the most athletic championship game I can remember. I was exhausted just watching it and I had no dog in the fight!
Below, you can enjoy both last night's rendition and I've also included a 1992 version to show some comparison, and predictably similar shots despite the 16 year separation. If you scroll YouTube you'll find that dozens and soon to be hundreds of fans have customized (ie. ripped off) Luther Vandross' sports anthem to meet their teams' needs. It ranges from most major college basketball programs to high school lacrosse teams. Nowhere have I seen it applied to Northwestern Football. So consider this a shout-out to the NU FB fans who have editing capabilities - fire up the NU FB version of OSM and you have LTP as your platform.
It does make you realize how amazing a college basketball playoff is compared to the broken system of college football. Now, I'm a major proponent of a football playoff system and I've yet to hear a compelling argument from any senior level executive in the college football system that I buy. The fact that football doesn't have an iconic season-ending montage song is silly. Recapped highlights of the BCS games simply doesn't cut it. My hole-shooting of bad non-playoff supporters is a complete other post (or series of posts), but watching last night's OSM simply caused me to realize how "right" the NCAA has nailed the basketball tournament, yet the same organization is so "wrong" about football. Oh, well, regardless, the OSM is my official right of passage into spring, which means Kenosha is creeping ever closer. Enjoy!

I just voted "no" in your poll: I don't believe NU will make the Final Four before 2050. I vote no despite my belief that NU basketball could break through one day, were many many stars to align. There are several storied programs and coaches that have great success but never reach a Final Four. Plus, I would envision NU's success coming from good ballplayers playing well together, and not from overwhelming athleticism. And face it, Final Four teams usually have overwhelming athleticism.
@george - were you just eavesdropping on my phone conversation?!!! Had the exact same conclusion/philosophy on my "no" vote. Spot on.
Glad to hear you agree with me!
The more sensitive question -- particularly on this board -- is whether we believe NU will play in a BCS title game.
