Cats Implode - Embarass Selves in 28-17 Iowa loss

The tide has turned. It is possible for NU to embarass itself by losing to Iowa. Much like the overzealous Hawkeye fans who mock us for thinking we even belong on the same field as their beloved bumblebees, NU has reached a point in the program where this loss is unacceptable. A dominating 14-0 jump start, exactly what the Dr. ordered, unraveled after a McManis roughing the kicker penalty. The karma changed, Christensen awoke, our defense imploded, and Bacher went greedy.
For the 2nd week in a row, we had a 4th quarter meltdown. Bacher had wide open players underneath, but Bacher continued to go for the home run and the magic INT # - was eclipsed (more than 1) and we lost.

More to come later tonight. Simple - CJ has more than 1 INT we lose, if not we win. Bowl game just went poof! Hope for 6-6 at this point, which, due to the wild year, will leave us bowl-less.

Crushing, devastating, humiliating loss.

Coffee is for closers, and this team gets no coffee. It's as if Bacher loses his mind in the fourth quarter sometimes.

Don't even get me started on how our corners bite on every move their receivers make.

"crushing, devastating, humiliating."
Couldn't have said it any better. This one really gets under my skin. What an ugly game. For the first time in quite a while, I feel like I wasted my entire afternoon watching this debacle.

I can't get angry at 20yr old kids, so no specific knocks on the players. It's just tough to stomach.

How about running the ball in the 4th quarter for once? Of course Sutton had two deadly drops in the game. Both were HUGE.

Smack talk aside, I did not expect Iowa to win. Hell, I wasn't even surprised to see the score hit 14-0 so quickly.

Best of luck to you gents the rest of the way.

@ Pcentrist: Excellent point about Sutton. My crew and I were saying the same thing all second half: "Can we just run the ball a few times here?!?!"

Sutton had almost 100 yards at halftime. In the second half he had eight carries. Eight! Twice when the Cats were down 21-17, they began drives with plenty of time on the clock (7:27 on one drive and 5:26 on the other) to mix in some runs -- or, you know, even attempt one. It was pretty obvious that Bacher was off his game today. So, at points in the game where one score would give you the lead and there was plenty of time on the clock, why didn't the Cats put the ball in the hands of their best player?

I did not get to see this game until the end of the third quarter. From what I saw, the Cats would have problems beating NCE (hell, does NCE even exist anymore?). Really, based on the last 20 minutes of today's game, what I find most remarkable is that there are 5 teams that we were able to beat.

Not sure where to start with this, but I'll just point out a few things. First, Bacher was absolutely awful. That pick he threw on the flea flicker was worthy of a Pop Warner backup. He somehow managed to find the one receiver that was covered by three (3) defenders, suggesting that there was at least one receiver out there who was covered by zero (0) defenders- unless Iowa was allowed to have 13 or so men on the field that play. Really, his vision was just awful, his touch was just awful, his leadership was just awful- I really cannot find anything positive to say about what I saw.

Next- this guy McManis- is he the starter there? Because if he is, I may have to take back my comment about the (allegedly) 5 foot 1 inch guy we've recruited. Hell, let's get the grease man from Ocean's 11; he's gotta have better cover skills than McManis. They'd be better off without even covering the guy, and bringing in an extra D lineman; at least we'd have a decent chance to get to the QB.

I picked the Cats to win today not because I thought we were all that good- I've barely had a chance to see us play, so I had no real good feel for that. I picked the Cats because I've seen Iowa play several times, and knew that they really stink. We couldn't possibly be worse than that godawful team, could we?

I guess so.

PS- that Noel is really hitting here hard right now. My first hurricane.

Sirs,

I echo the sentiments of my contemporary, the well-read Mr. Pow Surprise. It was surely surprising to win. I wish you the best of luck in your upcoming tussles with IU and Zookey.

Cheers, ole chaps...
