Buckeye Lane View of Northwestern

Adam from Buckeye Lane has taken over LTP for the day. The quid pro quo is that I would get to take the steering wheel for a drive down Buckeye Lane. Be sure to check out Buckeye Lane today and see how LTP performed for Buckeye Nation. Be sure to help me out and add some validity to my post!

LTP Question: OSU Perspective of Ohio Players on NU roster

Buckeye Lane Response:
Northwestern fans must be wondering if Ohio State fans even know that Tyrell Sutton came from the state of Ohio.

Ohio State fans cover a vast area and the majority probably don’t have a clue who anyone is until they come up big on Saturdays.

Unless you are a Buckeye fan from the particular region of where a high school star is from, then you don’t think the Buckeyes missed the boat on that player.

I’m sure people, who saw Sutton rush for 3,241 yards as a senior at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, were shocked to see the Buckeyes pass on Ohio’s Mr. Football.

I’m sure his fans were shocked to see that Sutton only got offers from Illinois, Akron, Ball State and Miami (Ohio).

It reminds me of so many other players: My hometown is Dayton, Ohio – I remember when Ohio State passed on Dayton-area running backs Ryan Brewer (went to South Carolina) and Javon Ringer (currently at Michigan State).

People were shocked that OSU didn’t offer a full ride for Ringer, who had offers from USC, Florida and Tennessee.

High school fans in Cincinnati were disappointed that running back DeShaun Wynn picked Florida.

Rumor has it, that Ohio State sent Curtis Enis a recruiting package with his name spelled as ‘Curtis Penis’ – no OSU fan noticed Enis until they saw him running all over OSU’s defense.

The same goes for Sutton.

Lake the Posts question: ‘How has the perception of NU changed from the days when I would get a hug for showing up?’

Buckeye Lane response:
Honestly, you would still get some hugs.

However, if Northwestern were able to pull off an upset – then those hugs will turn into unfriendly beat downs.

For the most part, Ohio State loves you guys. Our friendly purple people from the Windy City, we would love to visit you.

But, we are concerned when we face any team on a night game on the road.

I remember the last time the Wildcats beat the Buckeyes in 2004 (it was a night game).

OSU lost 27-33 in overtime, but prior to the game the Buckeyes were undefeated and ESPN was saying that kicker Mike Nugent was a Heisman candiadate.

The loss was so devatasting that the biggest Buckeye of all-time, Neutron Man, died shortly after.

Why do I take comments like:
"For the most part, Ohio State loves you guys. Our friendly purple people from the Windy City, we would love to visit you."
so poorly?

Maybe its the subtle patronization that we should feel lucky to be in the Big 10. I'm sure they'll call my response a Napoleon's complex. Regardless, I only root for OSU when they play a nonconference game. I'm glad they are in the B10 and I wish them the best in all but one of their games this year.

If this comment came from any other Big Ten School I'd be typically annoyed. But not these guys - they've earned the right to think of us exacltly as Buckeye Lane describes.

I was trying to take the point of view of the average Buckeye fan.

For the most part we are not that knowledgeable about football.

It is one of those situations where Buckeye fans either think that we are the best or we stink.

For example, our fans feel that the poor play of Ohio State is to blame for a loss - take '04 for example - never do we say - "wow, NU has a really good team" - it's more like - "Justin Zwick sucks get him out of there!"

Also, Buckeye fans love to travel - and a game against NU is a great excuse to visit Chicago.
